I want to ask you a question before I start my speech. How do you define your happiness? I think everyone will have different ideas. The definition of happiness is difficult. Then how about this question? Why do we pursue happiness? We don’t clearly define the concept of happiness, but we’re trying to realize that vague notion.
우선 연설을 시작하기 전에 여러분에게 질문을 던지고 싶습니다. 여러분 행복을 어떻게 정의하고 있습니까? 사람마다 생각이 다를 거라고 생각을 합니다. 행복의 정의는 난해합니다. 그러면 이 질문은 어때요? 왜 우리는 행복을 추구합니까? 우리는 행복이라는 개념을 명확하게 정의를 못하고 있지만 그 막연한 개념을 실현시키고자 노력하고 있습니다.
I want to be happy, too. So, I thought about how people can be happy. In conclusion, it’s not about pursuing happiness but rather trying our best to avoid unhappiness which allows us to achieve happiness in the end. This means we must eliminate all elements of unhappiness from the world and the key element that brings unhappiness is inequality.
저도 행복이 되고 싶습니다. 그래서 저는 어떻게 하면 사람이 행복이 될 수 잇는지를 생각해 보았습니다. 사색한 결과 행복이 되는 노력을 하는 것이 아니라 불행이 되지 않도록 노력을 하는 게 행복 성취를 위해 필요하다는 결론이 나왔습니다. 불행이 되지 않도록 노력한다는 뜻은 사람이 불행이 되는 요소를 이 세상으로부터 완전히 소멸시킨다는 것입니다. 사람을 불행으로 만드는 핵심 요소는 불평등입니다.
According to the 2016 World Happiness Report, the difference between a happy country and an unhappy country is inequality. The report states that “people in countries with less inequality feel more happiness,” and suggests an example for people to become happy.
2016년 세계행복도보고서에 따르면 행복한 나라와 그렇지 않는 나라의 차이점은
불평등이라고 한다. 또 이 보고서는 (더욱 불평등이 적은 나라의 국민들이 더욱 행복을 느낄 스 있다)고 결론을 치고 또 사람이 행복이 되기 위한 모범을 시사하고 있습니다.
Does the word “inequality” leave a good impression? It doesn’t sound good, right? Because there’s a background history that gives the word its meaning. History shows that inequality has existed in the past, including gender, race, differentialism, age, and social class, and we still see its tendency in modern society today. The cause of these issues on inequality that is addressed in education is mainly said to be because of ideology and religion, or Dodge. However, this only covers the external side and judges the issue in an objective manner. It misses the main focus on the essence of the inner world. What causes inequality? It’s not about money, it’s not about territory, it’s not about religion, it’s because it lacks the maturity of character that a person must have.
(불평등)이라는 단어를 듣고 좋은 호감이 있습니까? 안 들겠죠? 그것은 그 단어에 그 의미를 부여한 역사가 배경에 있기 때문입니다. 역사를 살펴보면 남녀나 인종, 미분제도, 연령 및 사회 계층 등의 불평등이 과거에 존재하고 있었고 지금의 현대 사회에도 그 풍조는 남아 있습니다. 이런 불평등이 일어나는 원인을 수많는 교육서에는 도지나 경제나, 이념, 종교 문제 등으로 기재되고 있다. 그러나 이것은 외면적인 사상을 보고 객관적으로 판단을 내렸을 뿐이고 그 내면의 본질에 초점을 안 맞추고 있다. 왜 불평등은 생기냐? 그것은 돈이나 도지, 종교의 문제가 아니라 사람이라면 가져야 하는 인성의 부분인 인격 성숙이 이루어지지 않았기 때문입니다.
Many people with good characteristics have been born in this world. One example is Mother Teresa. She dedicated her entire life to saving mankind. Isn’t she considered a model character because she gave love to people and treated them equally instead of seeking wealth, money, or power? Is it not true that people are moved by such actions and become inspired to achieve happiness too. Wouldn’t all of mankind be happy if people of such character overflowed in this world?
역사상 수많은 인격자가 이 세상에 태어나 떠났습니다. 그 대표적인 예로서 Mother tellesa가 있습니다. 그녀는 인류를 구하기 위해 그 모든 생애를 바쳤습니다. 그녀가 유명한 인격자로서 꼽히는 이유는 자산을 위해가 아니라 평등하게 타인을 배려하고 돈이나 권력을 추구하지 않아 사람에게 사랑을 베풀었기 때문이가 아닙니까?
이런 모습을 보고 사람은 감명을 받아 행복을 실제로 실현시킬 수 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있었다는 것 아닙니까? 이런 인격자가 세계에 넘치면 사람은 행복이 될 수 있는 것이 이닙니까?
Seeing people of such character made me dream where I would teach the world through character education. I do not yet have enough knowledge, skill, experience, or character to give this kind of education. That is why I will put my efforts into what I can do now at Sun moon University.
I will strive to become an educator who can educate people someday.
그런 모습을 보고 나는 그런 인격자를 이 세상에 배출하기 위한 인격 교육을 하고 싶다는 꿈을 가지게 되었습니다. 아직 인격 교육을 할 수 있는 정도의 지식, 기술, 경험, 인격은 없습니다. 그렇기 때문에 저는 선문대학교에서 지금 내가 할 수 있는 것에 노력을 기울이고
언젠가 인격 교육을 할 수 있는 교육자가 되기 위해 매진하겠습니다.
I have a dream. It’s about creating a world where every single person can be happy. One day, I want to get rid of murder from the world. I would like you to keep in mind that there are people in this world who have that kind of mindset, and I would also want you to be aware that there are people here who carry that kind of future too.
저에게는 꿈이 있습니다. 그것은 사람이 한 명도 빠짐없이 행복이 될 수 있는 세계를 만드는 것입니다. 언젠가 사람이 사람을 죽이는 행위를 이 세상에서 없애고 싶습니다.
여러분이 그런 마음가짐을 가지고 있는 사람들이 이 세상에 있다는 걸 기억해 주시면 좋겠고 미래를 짊어지는 인재가 여기에 있다는 사실을 인지해 주시면 좋겠습니다. 감사합니다.
